These two photos were entered into the BYUI Student Art Show for display in the Spori Gallery. I didn't hear about the art show deadline until the very last minute, so I entered two photos that I had printed and ready to go. They were two of my favorites anyway. I had to get them framed quickly, and that turned out to be more a hassle than expected because there were a lot of particles floating around for some reason.

The light painting photo, Orbit was from my favorite, and one of my most educational photo excursions of this semester. They also got pretty excited responses from my peers. Het Brugge Tafereel has some sentimental value. It was taken in Brugge, Belgium, a city that I lived in for 6 months while I lived in Europe for 2 years. It's a beautiful, well-preserved medieval city, and this photo brings back so many memories.

The entry was submitted on 2 March, 2012.

Orbit was pretty strong as it was, but I liked the red glow in the bottom right corner, and the taillight streaks above the bridge in two other exposures, so I gathered those elements from the other exposures. My original composition was with the light orbit centered on the screen, but decided later to crop it to the lower left corner.

Strength Unseen was a light painting combination of 8 exposures to accent different portions of the image. A train came by while the tripod was set. That was lucky. I bumped up the saturation a bit and brought more dramatic blues to the sky. Then I cropped it in a bit more to take away some of the boring poles in the foreground.

Orbit was just a long exposure of me driving in circles under a bridge. I love the light trails of the cars driving on the bridge above me. Both Strength Unseen and Chic Mystique were multiple exposure combos. We got incrdibly lucky that a train came by when I had everything set up for Strength Unseen (that's the bright white wisp). Soul Extractor and Vortex were done just goofing around with Christmas Lights. I was a bit intrigued by the way the lights didn't appear as one continuous swirling line, but a dashed line. I do really like it that way though. Because I had so many different exposures combined to make a couple of my light paintings, I thought it would be most practical for all of us if I didn't post each exposure.

Desert Rose was edited using the Sprayed Edge Effect tutorial. I also did some color correction and blur effects on the image. Spiritually Fed had to be straightened out a bit, and then I just used the Border & Title steps. After some color correction and airbrushing, Scarlet got the Burned Border treatment. And Cranky was my Fine Art Template piece, also with some minor color enhancement.

I experimented with some more HDRs on Wooden Stone and Bates & Meade. Both were post-production because I didn't have the time in either situation to set up the tripod. Bannack Bunny was just dumb luck. The stove in Cold Warmth was really tricky to light right. Because it is so dark, and other parts of it so shiny, it was hard to strike the right balance. Ultimatum was fun. There was more editing to it than meets the eye. I think Thane must have been a mobster in a former life. He had all the right moves.

I think the two portraits are my favorite of this set too.
